When/ Who/ How?
In 1980, Memphis design was founded by Ettore Sottsass along with his group of young designers and architects in Milan, Italy.
The name Memphis was originated from the song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” by artist Bob Dylan, which was played in his apartment on meeting.
What it’s mean?
Memphis design (Memphis style) are based on “bold, primary and pastel colours, shapes and repetitive patterns” in an obtrusive way.
This design mainly includes
- 3S -Strokes, Speckles, Squiggles.
- Bold patterns, Geometric shapes.
- Vibrant, pastels and flat colours.
Inspirations for Designers 👩🎨
Its almost been a 40 years since this Memphis style came out, However it’s still an inspirational and Influential for many designers till now. Almost many famous brands has been touched by this design style for their product.

From my POV
Here is my thoughts about Android’s visually overhauled Material design User interface. Obviously its monochromatic and flat, minimal. Just adding an animation to the Memphis style gives a look of Material design.
